Automated crate loading solution improves line efficiency, throughput and reliability for international fresh produce business

Last year, MULTIVAC UK supplied family owned fresh produce business, G’S, with an automatic crate loading solution, which completed their production line for packing fresh beetroot.

Founded in 1952, G’s was first established in Cambridgeshire by Guy Shropshire, where he originally sold freshly picked, soil covered celery in traditional bushel boxes. After some successful years, he invested in purpose built packhouses and was able to supply washed celery to wholesalers, which is when the company became known as G’s – short for Guy’s. Fast forward to 2025, and G’s is one of the largest fresh produce suppliers in Europe and has businesses in the UK, Poland, Spain, Netherlands and North America.

Quality you can trust

Having been a customer of MULTIVAC for more than 20 years, when looking for a new solution G’s knew that MULTIVAC were the trusted partner that they could rely on, and approached them with their need for a new robot system on their beetroot packing line.

Prior to this, the business used a robot system from an alternative supplier which had over time become unreliable, caused frequent breakdowns and, due to it’s age, had become obsolete, leaving them with no option but to find a replacement. Regional Sales Manager at MULTIVAC UK, Luke Gowen, worked with Project Manager at G’s, Ray Crome, to discuss the options available and decide on the H 130 automatic crate loader, which was customised to fit their specific requirements.

Much like any project, there were challenges along the way, which the team at MULTIVAC UK faced head on. G’s required a bespoke H130 robot to fit into their existing infrastructure without disrupting production flow, which also had to be installed amidst a factory layout reshuffle. Ray Crome worked closely with the Project Management team from MULTIVAC UK to ensure a seamless process before, during, and after installation.

Intelligent Line Solutions for Maximum Productivity and Success

The crate loading solution was the final piece to the puzzle for G’s, and this completed a comprehensive full line solution for producing air-sealed, semi-rigid beetroot packs with a peel/re-seal functionality.

The full line solution now compromises of an R245 Thermoforming Machine, MBS200 Converger, I211 Inspection system, and L300 Labeller, which together work seamlessly to provide G’s with increased throughput, achieving an output of up to 80 packs per minute, in addition to reduced downtime and labour requirements.

MULTIVAC UK offer integrated solutions for each customers specific production challenges, and every one is individually configured in terms of processing, packaging and end-of-line processes.

Optimum Product and Pack Handling

MULTIVAC’s portfolio of robots can handle products, packs, boxes, crates or containers, and guarantee maximum output, precision, and flexibility. By completing their line with a robot solution, G’s can now see a clear improvement in downtime which is reflected in the machines OME (Overall Machine Efficiency) results.

G’s also included Smart Services in their package, which offers a solution for maximum productivity, simple operation and direct support, throughout the entire lifespan of their MULTIVAC machine. With this addition, G’s can view real-time data of their machines which allows them to monitor, control and optimise their production line, also giving MULTIVAC’s Technicians quick and easy access when needed.

Seamless Installation and Exceptional Aftersales Service

MULTIVAC UK worked closely with G’s to ensure their new machinery was installed smoothly, without disruptuing regular operation. Regional Sales Manager, Luke Gowen, made frequent site visits during the installation to demonstrate both the machine’s capabilities and the after-sales support.

G’s can now continue to benefit from the comprehensive and advanced support provided by MULTIVAC UK’s Technical Service department, which ensures maximum availability and efficiency of their new robot machines, with access to over 60 field service technicians and a technical helpdesk, all available at no extra cost.
